The Pagan City

Today I went on a guided walk of the "Pagan City," which was all about the Prechristian religious activities and sights of London. Ironically today, most of the sites today are now Christian sites, St. Paul's for example is on a site sacred to the Pagans.

The courtyard of Somerset House, normally seen from the river
St. Mary le Strand, built on the site of a sacred well and ancient maypole
The "wedding cake" spire of St. Bride's Fleet Street, another Wren church
Two statues of ancient Celtic gods who strike a bell on a clock that is on the church of St. Dunstans in the West
A statue of Queen Elizabeth I which used to be on the old Ludgate, one of the gates of the ancient wall around London. It was demolished in the 1700s.
The former Bank of England, now a rather posh pub. Scenes in Mary Poppins were filmed here. (This is where Mr. Banks worked)
A statue of Dr. Samuel Johnson, sited near an ancient Pagan well
A statue of Hodge, Dr. Johnson's cat
A flowering tree behind St. Paul's
